This page contains answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about our range of centrifugal pumps, including information about the different pump types that we offer for various applications as well as maintenance, delivery, spares, and more.

What are your standard delivery periods/lead times?

The delivery period for our standard pumps are normally between 8-10 weeks.

What types of pumps do you manufacture?

We manufacture a complete range of centrifugal process pumps. Click here for our list of pump products and specifications.

Where are your pumps manufactured?

Our pumps are manufactured locally at our premises in Boksburg, Gauteng.

What materials do you use for pump construction?

SAM Engineering manufactures pumps in a full range of metals, which include stainless steel and low alloy steels, iron base, chromium, nickel, etc. Find out more here

What types of pump sealing do you offer?

Depending on the application, we offer gland packing, mechanical seals or dynamic seals.

What is meant by NPSH required and NPSH available?

NPSH = Net Positive Suction Head

NPSH Available (NPSHA): The absolute pressure at the suction port of the pump, available on site.

NPSH Required (NPSHR): The minimum pressure required at the suction port of the pump to keep the pump from cavitating.  The NPSHA should always exceed the NPSHR.

Is there only one pump that will suit my application?

No, we have various pump models to suit specific applications which can be altered by changing impeller trims and motor speeds.

What is your testing specification?

We test according to ISO 9906 Grade 2 or on request.

How deep is your testing pit?

Our pit measures 2.4m deep, however we can test up to 3.5m.

Can you test my pump?

Yes, we have the facilities and capacities to test most pump types.  Learn more about our testing facilities.

What is meant by 2 pole, 4 pole and 6 pole?

This refers to the RPM at which the pump/motor rotates at 50Hz.  

2 pole = 2,900rpm

4 pole = 1,450rpm

6 pole = 980rpm

Do you supply water pumps?

Yes, our standard flow rate is between 3m³/hr - 3,500m³/hr.  Our standard head is between 5m-150m.

Are pumps available ex-stock?

No, due to the custom nature of our pumps, we do not keep stock of all components in all materials.

Are all your pumps custom-made?

Yes, each pump is customised to suit your specific application requirements.

Do you supply spares?

Yes, we keep stock of basic maintenance spares such as gaskets and O-rings as well casings, impellers, stuffing boxes and frames limited to common material types. Click here to find out more.

Do you do repairs?

Do you provide service support?

Yes, we have knowledgeable technical representatives who provide back-up support for all our products as well as service and commissioning assistance on request.

Do you have a maintenance plan?

Yes, we can supply a recommended maintenance schedule.  Please also refer to our Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manuals per pump type for additional maintenance information.

What is your standard warranty period?

Our standard warranty on all pump products is 12 months from commissioning or 18 months from delivery.

Do you supply manuals for your pumps?

Yes, our manuals are available for download on our website or on request. Visit our Technical Downloads section

Do you have distributors?

Yes, we have distributors throughout Africa.  Click here to view our full distributors list.

Do you provide pump training?

Why is my pump not performing?

There are many different reasons why a pump could fail. SAM Engineering offers a Troubleshooting Guide for a list of common pumping problems and failures with probable causes and procedures for checking and correcting possible faults.
